I’ve been wanting to set up a blog for a long time now, but I am not super techy, so I figured that I would have my computer savvy friend over to help, and that way, I would be immune to any particularly bad screwups, or so I thought.
We started off the day right by sending the receipt and verification emails to a different Ethan Fisher. He was not exactly happy to receive someone else’s emails, but was nice enough to immediately contact me and forward me the emails we needed. We had to change the email to the proper Ethan, and that was when we contacted customer support for the first time. The people at Bluehost were extremely helpful, and they were kind, even to a technological moron like myself.
After that, as we were setting up WordPress, my friend tried to setup an anti-bot plugin and locked us out of the website. Good job Simon. Apparently, you can’t have that before there is an actual domain, which, in retrospect, should be obvious.
The next day, we began working on it once more. It went a lot better, relatively speaking, pretty much anything would be better than our start. To get back in, we basically hit the kill switch and reset the website. Now that we got back in, we got to the actual work of designing the blog and making sure things were in their proper order. That took about an hour, but the rest of the day was just fooling around and listening to music. Hence the image for this page.
And then we tried to set up the website’s administrative email. Customer support chat 2 and 3. First, we couldn’t log in, and then, we had to figure out how to set up the email on iOS devices. Again, the Bluehost people were wonderful, but at this point, I was feeling pretty embarrassed. But in the end, it only took a day and a half to setup a website. And, in the end, it was a learning experience. I learned (through experience) that haste makes waste, that it doesn’t hurt to double check things, and most of all, that it is really weird to see a message from someone with your own name.
I’m sure I’ll find more ways to mess up while working on this, but it has been fun. I got to learn about WordPress, and computers in general. I’m not sure what will all end up on this blog because I have a lot of varied interests, so it will definitely be all over the place. It might be chaos, but hopefully it is a fun chaos.
